In NHL Nightly Notables, we begin in Raleigh, where two teams who were a joint affiliate of the Albany River Rats in 2006-07 went down to the wire in OT. The Carolina Hurricanes hosted the Colorado Avalanche and with the game tied at 1-1 in OT, former Rat Brandon Sutter netted the 2-1 winner past Craig Anderson for his fifth on the year and a Hurricanes victory.
Also from that game, ex-Rat defenseman Jamie McBain picked up a secondary assist on the OT winner, his sixth and sixth point overall. Other Rats suiting up for this contest were Pat Dwyer, Jay Harrison, Jiri Tlusty and backing up was Justin Peters for Carolina. Cody McLeod played for Colorado.
Moving along to the second of a home and home in New York, former Rats enforcer Trevor Gillies suited up for the Islanders once again but didn’t get into any scraps this time around. Henrik Lundqvist made 17 saves for the shutout as the Rangers beat the Isles for the second time in as many days 2-0.
From New York, NY to Western New York where the Buffalo Sabres blew out the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0 and things blew up in the third period. After picking up a five minute boarding penalty in the second, former Rats defenseman Mike Commodore of the Blue Jackets and former Rats forward Cody McCormick mixed things up in the third. Commodore has 29 PIM on the season, while McCormick now has 73. Both teams accumulated 112 PIM combined. Ryan Miller made 19 saves for the shutout.
Out in Minnesota, former River Rats Anton Babchuk and Brendan Morrison were victorious over former River Rat John Madden, as the Calgary Flames defeated the Minnesota Wild 3-2 in a shootout. Madden and Morrison of course were teammates at the University of Michigan and also with the Albany River Rats and New Jersey Devils.
Out on the left coast former Adirondack Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom tallied his seventh goal of the season as the Detroit Red Wings behind Jimmy Howard’s spectacular 41 save effort blanked the Anaheim Ducks 4-0.
Meanwhile in the AHL roundup: The Albany Devils got goals from David McIntyre and Vladimir Zharkov and 29 saves from Jeff Frazee, but were unable to thwart the homecoming of Sheldon Souray and the Hershey Bears, losing in a hard fought tilt 3-2.
In Manchester former River Rats defacto captain Mike Angelidis had a career night. Angelidis totaled five points, including two goals, three assists and was an astonishing plus five for the Norfolk Admirals as they shredded the Monarchs 7-2.
Another note of local importance, defenseman Matt Lashoff of East Greenbush, NY notched his third goal of the season for the Toronto Marlies in a 6-4 victory over the Abbotsford Heat.
In Cleveland, former Albany River Rats and Adirondack Phantoms goalie John Grahame made 33 stops in a 6-3 win for the Lake Erie Monsters over the Chicago Wolves. Not local but very notable, for Lake Erie Patrick Rissmiller scored four goals and former Lowell Devils forward Ben Walter also chipped in a goal for the Monsters.
Moving to Springfield, former River Rats forward Jay Pandolfo scored his third goal of the season and picked up an assist for the Falcons as they skated past the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-3.
Finally to put a bow on nightly notables, out in Rochester the Amerks continue to add to their Empire Cup standings lead as they topple the Syracuse Crunch 6-5.
