In NHL/AHL Nightly Notables, it appears as though the Albany Devils will be getting some much needed reinforcements. The New Jersey Devils have reportedly assigned defenseman Anssi Salmela to Albany on a two-week conditioning assignment. Salmela, coming off knee surgery was initially a Devils farmhand was part of the package sent to Atlanta for Ilya Kovalchuk before being reacquired by the Devils this year.
Additionally Albany should get some scoring punch and their captain back as New Jersey has put forward Stephen Gionta and defenseman Olivier Magnan on waivers. Should both clear they will be much welcomed depth for the nicked up A-Devs roster. In eight games prior to being called up to New Jersey, Gionta compiled a line of two goals and three assists for five points. Meanwhile in just three games for Albany Magnan had one assist and registered four PIM. One would also have to believe that once Salmela returns to full strength and is brought back up, New Jersey will send down another player as they continued to welcome back the walking wounded.
In NHL action former Albany River Rats defenseman Johnny Boychuk had his fifth assist on the year as the Boston Bruins defeated the former parent club of the Capital District Islanders, the New York Islanders, 5-2. Current Isles and ex-Rats enforcer Trevor Gillies got into a fight with the B’s Shawn Thornton as seen below. Gillies now has 55 PIM on the year.
In wild Western New York affair the Buffalo Sabres took down the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on the strength of a goal and two assists by former River Rat Cody McCormick. McCormick who has served mostly as the chief enforcer for the Sabres this season, contributed the eventual game winner less than a minute into the third. The goal was the Sabres fourth as well as McCormick’s fourth marker on the year.
McCormick also assisted on both of Paul Gaustad’s goals, one in the first period to open the scoring and the second on an empty netter late in the third to salt the game away. McCormick now has five assists for Buffalo.
Less than a week after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Sens, the New York Rangers rode the strength of three third period goals to skate past Ottawa 5-3.
In a surprising turn of events the Florida Panthers shutout the Washington Capitals 3-0. Panthers netminder Tomas Vokun turned away 36 shots in the effort.
From St. Louis, where the Blues took care of the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1, former Rats enforcer Cam Janssen now of the Blues went toe to toe with Jared Boll of the Jackets. Janssen has 42 PIM for the Blues. Highlights below.
Rounding things out in Los Angeles where former Rats defenseman Anton Babchuk picked up his sixth assist of the year on a late third period power-play goal by Olli Jokinen, as the Calgary cut the Kings lead in half 2-1. However Los Angeles was able to hold on and douse the Flames by that final tally of 2-1.
