NHL Nightly Notables

In NHL Nightly Notables, a quick sprint around the rink.  Local NHL of note, the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins all lost.

Former Albany River Rats grinder Michael Rupp scored his third goal of the season for the Pittsburgh Penguins in their 5-2 rout of the Sabres.  The Pens win streak now stands at 12.

In New Jersey former Adirondack Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom got Detroit going in the first with his ninth goal of the season and would later add an assist in the second as the Red Wings blitzed the Devils 4-1.  Back between the pipes and preserving the win was ex-A-Wings goalie Chris Osgood, who turned away 33 shots on the night.  For Detroit it was their Western Conference leading 19th win and 41st point on the year.  On the New Jersey side, ex-Rats star Patrik Elias picked up his sixth goal of the year on the power-play less than a minute into the third.  Another ex-River Rat Travis Zajac assisted on the goal along with Ilya Kovalchuk.

In Washington another former Adirondack Red Wings forward had a nice night.  Mike Knuble notched his sixth marker of the year for the Capitals and later added an assist.  However the Colorado Avalanche were able to hold off a late surge for the 3-2 victory.

Finally out in the Mid-West the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the St. Louis Blues in a shootout 2-1.  Former River Rat Brandon Sutter put the Canes out front in the second with their sole regulation goal, the goal being his sixth of the year.
