In the latest installment of Rinkside Roundup we begin in Ottawa where former Albany River Rats forward Zach Boychuk had a huge night for the Carolina Hurricanes. Boychuk got the Canes going with his first two goals of the season against the Sens. Pat Dwyer, who assisted on Boychuk’s first goal in the opening frame and scored the winner in the Canes previous game against Toronto, capped off the scoring with his seventh in the third. Cam Ward made 37 saves to record the 4-0 shutout.
Regionally the New York Islanders put the skids to Sid’s point streak at 25 and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in a shootout 2-1. Rick DiPietro posted 37 saves in the win for the Isles.
Across the Hudson River a spirited effort by the New Jersey Devils wasn’t enough as the New York Rangers continue their solid play on the road this season with a 3-1 victory. Former Albany River Rat Travis Zajac put the Devils out front with a loose scrum in front for his fifth of the year. One time Albany Devil Mattias Tedenby picked up the primary helper on Zajac’s goal. The Devils out-shot the Rangers 44-25 but still dropped their sixth straight contest overall.
In Minnesota former River Rat John Madden picked up his fifth assist of the year as part of a big three goal third, as the Wild took out the San Jose Sharks by a count of 5-3.
Down in Dallas former Adirondack Red Wing Kris Draper notched his second goal of the year as Detroit after being down to the Stars 3-1 early in the second, roared all the way back for six unanswered the rest of the way en route to a 7-3 victory.
Finally out west in a game with a wild first period which saw former Rat Brad Richardson register his sixth goal of the season for the Los Angeles Kings, the Phoenix Coyotes put up six of their own to win 6-3.
Around the “A” locally the Adirondack Phantoms who had been playing better of late, coming off their 2-0 shutout of Syracuse, got two goals again but it couldn’t beat the six served up by the Manchester Monarchs. Greg Moore scored his second in as many nights for Adirondack in the loss.
Former Rat Dan DaSilva recorded his sixth goal of the year in a winning cause for the Worcester Sharks as they downed the Springfield Falcons in a shootout 3-2.
East Greenbush native Matt Lashoff picked up a helper for the Toronto Marlies in a losing effort against the Chicago Wolves, 3-2 was the shootout final.
Nick Johnson netted a hat-trick for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins in their 5-0 drubbing of the Syracuse Crunch.
