Rinkside Roundup begins in New Jersey where the Devils were downed by the Minnesota Wild on a crazy carom off the side board by a count of 2-1. Recently recalled Albany Devil and Utica, NY native Nick Palmieri registered his first assist of the season and former Albany River Rat Travis Zajac also picked up his ninth assist on the Devils lone goal by Ilya Kovalchuk, his tenth.
They already love them some “Rollie the Goalie” action in Tampa Bay! In a battle of Southeast heavyweights, the “‘Ning Dynasty” made a statement by blanking the Capitals in Washington 1-0 in OT. A sloppy giveaway by Caps defenseman Jeff Schultz allowed Pavel Kubina to skate the puck in, pass the puck to Vinny Lecavalier whose shot was rebounded by Marty St. Louis who stuffed home his 17th for the winner. Dwayne Rolson, still sporting his New York Islanders goalie mask, posted 34 saves for the Bolts.
In other local action of note, the Buffalo Sabres lost to the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 in OT.
Finally out west in Edmonton where the Detroit Red Wings continue to roll by defeating the Oilers 5-3. Former Adirondack Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood made 22 stops for his fifth win on the season and win number 401 of his career. Another former A-Wing got into the act with Kris Draper netting his third goal on the campaign.
Around the “A” there was an East Division showdown that pitted the first place Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins against the Charlotte Checkers. Goals by Geoff Wallace, Eric Tangradi, Nick Johnson and Steve Wagner built a dominant 4-0 lead for the Pens deep into the third. The Checkers were able to get a couple of power-play goals in the third from ex- Rats Jacob Micflicker and Michal Jordan. However the Pens added a goal of the empty net variety for Tangradi’s second on the night as they rolled up an impressive 5-2 road win.
By the lake in Cleveland, OH the Rochester Americans skated by the Lake Erie Monsters 4-3. Former Albany River Rats and Adirondack Phantoms netminder John Grahame posted 22 saves in a losing effort for Lake Erie.
Speaking of former Rats and Phantoms goalies, Michael Leighton has cleared waivers and will be assigned from Philadelphia to Adirondack.
