In this edition of Rinkside Roundup a five goal outburst resulted in a 6-3 win for the New Jersey Devils over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Former Albany River Rat David Clarkson got the scoring going for New Jersey and Albany Devil Nick Palmieri capped it off.
Down one in the first Clarkson on a nice outlet feed from Albany Devil Tim Sestito netted a breakaway goal tying the game at 1-1. The goal was Clarkson’s sixth and for Sestito his first helper.
Trailing by one again in the third it was Clarkson again, this time ripping his seventh of the year to the back of the cage on the power-play from Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias. Following that was a Jason Arnott tip-in for his tenth from Henrik Tallinder and Vladimir Zharkov to give the Devils the lead. Zharkov the former Albany Devil much like Sestito picked up his first assist of the season. Then it was Dainius Zubrus for the eventual from former Rats Elias and Brian Rolston for his sixth and a 4-2 Devils lead.
Patrik Elias posted his ninth goal of the year and team leading 30th point from Rolston into an empty net. The two assist night for Rolston gives him five on the year. New Jersey’s final goal was also an empty net score from former Albany Devil Nick Palmieri, his first from Kovalchuk and surprisingly enough Martin Brodeur, sealing a 6-3 Devils win.
Down in Raleigh the Carolina Hurricanes knocked off the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3 in OT. In the second with the score tied at 1-1 Zac Dalpe re-directed a pass from Pat Dwyer into the back on the net for his third of the year and the lead. Former Rat Jaime McBain picked up a secondary assist on Jeff Skinner’s power-play goal as the Canes went up 3-1.
Atlanta would strike back with a power-play tally of their own as former River Rat Niclas Bergfors recorded his ninth from another ex-Rat Andrew Ladd.
Bryan Little tied the game for Atlanta in the third but Erik Cole from Oswego, NY netted the winner in OT for Carolina. Former Rats keeper Justin Peters made 25 stops to record the victory.
In other local action the New York Islanders were blown out in the Windy City. The Chicago Blackhawks recorded a four goal onslaught in the second to go up 5-0. Overall the Blackhawks had 45 shots on goal and Corey Crawford turned away all 29 shots he encountered to blank the Isles. Patrick Sharp’s 25th in the first on the power-play proved enough for the Chicago victory.
In other news around the league the Columbus Blue Jackets have sent former Albany River Rats defenseman Mike Commodore down to the AHL Springfield Falcons.
Around the “A” locals Matt Lashoff and Jerry D’Amigo got on the board for the Toronto Marlies in their 4-3 shootout win over the Chicago Wolves. Lashoff and D’Amigo each recorded their fourth goals on the season respectively.
Finally the Oklahoma City Barons are starting to look like the Hershey Bears-South with a 5-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters. Former River Rats defenseman Bryan Helmer once again connected with his old Bears teammate Alexander Giroux on the power-play to put the Barons up 2-0. It was a four-point night for Giroux who posted two goals and two assists. Lake Erie goalie John Grahame formerly of the Rats and Adirondack Phantoms made 19 saves in the loss.
