In Rinkside Roundup another grind it out win in Washington for the New York Rangers. Down 1-0 mid-way through the third, Marian Gaborik knocked home a rebound for the Blueshirts for his 16th, past the Caps Braden Holtby. From there the contest went to a shootout where Artem Anisimov netted the 2-1 winner. Martin Biron had 22 saves, picked up his eighth win and improved to 4-1 on the road for the year.
In Raleigh the Hurricanes “skinned” the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4. In the second former Albany River Rats defenseman Jamie McBain slapped his third goal of the year into the back of the cage to break a one-all tie.
Early in the final frame another former River Rat lengthened the Carolina lead, Brandon Sutter slid a backhand goal off a rebound in front for his ninth on the campaign. The goal came from Ian White and just recalled Zach Boychuk. After two Toronto goals by Tim Brent to knot the game at three, Sutter would strike once again for his tenth goal of the season., wristing a shot past the glove hand of J.S. Giguere.
Shortly thereafter it was Calder Trophy candidate Jeff Skinner with the eventual winner, posting his 18th of the year in an impressive rookie campaign. An empty net goal by Erik Cole of Oswego, NY would salt away a 6-4 Hurricanes victory.
Out in Calgary, former Albany River Rats sniper Brendan Morrison added an insurance goal on a tick-tack-toe play for his third in three games for the Flames in their 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Morrison’s goal, his eighth of the year came on the power-play mid-way through the third for Calgary.
The next stop in Colorado where ex-Rats defenseman Kyle Cumiskey notched two helpers to help the Avalanche to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Cumiskey now has six assists on the season for the Avs.
Also getting into the action for the Blues was former Rats enforcer Cam Janssen. Janssen now has 66 PIM on the year. Janssen, six inches shorter than David Koci, showed off that grit and toughness that has made him one of the more elite brawlers in the game.
Late local action saw the Boston Bruins blanked 2-0 by Jonathan Quick’s 34 saves and the Los Angeles Kings. Ryan Smyth and Andrei Loktionov got on the board for L.A.
Also out west in a battle of division leaders, the Vancouver Canucks smoked the Dallas Stars 7-1. Ryan Kesler notched his 27th of the year and added a helper. Henrik Sedin posted a goal and two assists on the night for the Canucks as well.
