Empire State Cup Standings Games Ending March 16, 2011
There are five AHL clubs in New York State, the most of any state in the league. Those five teams vying for the 2010-11 Empire State Cup are: Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers), Albany Devils (New Jersey Devils), Binghamton Senators (Ottawa Senators), Rochester Americans (Florida Panthers) and Syracuse Crunch (Anaheim Ducks). The records below indicate the head-to-head standings between the five thus far this season.
Most Recent Update: March 16, 2011: @ Syracuse: Albany Devils 6 Syracuse Crunch 1. It has been a forward March for the Devils this month as they stomped the Crunch 6-1 in Syracuse on Wednesday night. Recently recalled defenseman Andy Thomas put Albany on the board with his first of the year. After Syracuse tied it in the second, it was Tim Sestito lighting the lamp for the Devils for the eventual winner and his fifth on the season. Albany then blew the doors off in the third with a four goal output. Adam Henrique added to his Devils franchise record for goals by a rookie with his 22nd on the power-play. Much like Sestito it was a nice home coming for fellow Central New Yorker Steve Zalewski, who tallied his 12th on the power-play. Following that was Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond for the second straight contest with his career high sixth on the campaign. Finally AHL Player of the Week Chad Wiseman capped off a three point night with his 13th of the year, just one week removed from his four goal third period game against Bridgeport. On the Wiseman goal, Captain Stephen Gionta who started his career in Albany, became the franchise leader in points with a secondary helper on Wiseman’s marker.
Most Recent Update: March 16, 2011: @ Adirondack: Adirondack Phantoms 5 Binghamton Senators 2. In Glens Falls the Phantoms downed the Senators 5-2. Cullen Eddy netted his first of the season for the Phantoms for the eventual winner in the second. Roman Wick posted both Senators tallies on the evening. Tom Sestito also added a score for Adirondack.
With the Albany win and Binghamton loss, the Devils leap the Senators into first place overall in the Empire State Cup Standings. Albany has now won five straight and improves its record to 7-2 overall in the month of March, already a season high for wins in a month with six contests still to go.
